November 2011 – 10,000 Pygmy Cormorants Hibernating in Burgas 29.11.2011
More than 10,000 Pygmy cormorants have been observed wintering in Burgas in November. Almost 60 percent of the global population of the species spends the winter months around the Burgas Lakes. This winter, there are an estimated 16,000 individuals of the species within Bulgaria, most of which are found in the lakes around Burgas. In previous years, there were between 7000 and 8000 Pygmy Cormorants observed. However, this year’s early counts have already resulted in a significantly higher number.
Burgas Lakes – a rest stop for dozens of Night herons this winter 28.11.2011
This year 61 Night Herons have remained to winter in the Burgas Lakes. Ornithologists sighted the birds during their monitoring of a group of Pygmy Cormorants. Night Herons were seen among the thousands of Pygmy cormorants in the heart of Burgas, resting very close to a large department store.
Burgas Lake welcomes its first White Headed Ducks 25.11.2011
In late November, Burgas Lake welcomed its first White Headed Ducks of the year. In Vaya Lake 260 individuals of the species were observed. In December and January the number is expected to increase. Burgas Lake provides food to nearly 700 to 800 White Headed Ducks during the cold months of the year.
Conservation brigade dedicated to the protection of lakes will be undertaken as part of the “Days of Volunteerism in Action” in Burgas 18.11.2011
The “Days of Volunteerism in Action” project is organized by the Bulgarian Youth Red Cross and the City of Burgas and is devoted to supporting volunteerism and its development in the country.
A film about the environmental brigade "Atanasovsko Lake - 2009" will be part of the events planned for the days of volunteering in Burgas. It will be aired to the public on November 23, 2011 (Wednesday) at 18:00 in "Petya Dubarova" in the Cultural Center of Burgas.

Over 500 people from Burgas visited the Conservation Center "Poda" on Saturday 17.10.2011
More than 500 citizens of Burgas visited the Conservation Center "Poda" which is managed by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds, on Saturday. Visitors to the center had the opportunity to taste a delicious fish soup prepared by Chef Valerie Neshov. Valerie gladly answered thousands of questions addressed to him and his staff on how to prepare his delicious fish soup. Hundreds of guests were fascinated by the hosts and impressed by the event. After the fish soup, visitors enjoyed organically-produced honey from the region of Stara Planina for dessert.

Officers of VivaCom Burgas and volunteers carried out cleaning of the protected area "Poda" on Sunday. The initiative was organized by employees of the telecom company. The employees and a dozen volunteers showed no fear of the cold wind and rain. All together they managed to collect about 100 bags of waste from the protected area.
Campaign to clean-up the protected area "Poda" organized by BSPB on Sunday 14.10.2011
A campaign to clean-up the protected area "Poda" has been organized by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB). The cleaning project will take place on October 16, 2011 (Sunday). The event was initiated by the staff of "Viva Com" in Burgas who want to get involved in the ‘Days of Volunteering’ in Bulgaria. Anyone who would like to contribute to improving the state of the protected area is invited to join in the initiative.
Tasting Fish Soup and Watching Birds in the "Poda" Protected Area 12.10.2011
The Conservation Center "Poda" will welcome guests on October 15, 2011 (Saturday) from 11:00 to 16:00. The event will include tastings of fish soup prepared chef Valerie Neshov. The occasion is part of a celebration in Burgas for agro-ecology and the event will be organized by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) with the support the Burgas municipality.
The first wintering birds arrive at the Burgas Lakes 10.10.2011
Observations by BSPB teams during regular monitoring in September have sighted the first wintering birds’ arrival at the Burgas lakes. The team noted Tufted Ducks, Wigeon, Northern Pintail and Eurasian Teal feeding in the waters of the lakes. These species commonly roost at the lakes during the winter months. Their presence in the Burgas Lakes means that they are already preparing for the spring, when they will move on to breeding sites.
17 feathered inhabitants from the Protected Area "Poda" land in the Sea Casino of Burgas 21.09.2011
In seven days, 17 feathered inhabitants from of the Protected Area "Poda" will land in the Sea Casino of Burgas. An exhibition of paintings, the "17 moments of spring - 17 feathered inhabitants of the protected area "Poda" will open in the Casino. The exhibition begins on the first of the “Days of Ecology’ conducted by the Burgas Municipality. The event is organized as part of the EU LIFE + program "Life for Burgas lakes" implemented by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds.
